This policy covers the Gimik app and this website. Gimik is built and run from the Philippines. We collect only what the app needs, and this page lists all of it.
What we collect
Account and profile
- Email address, name and handle.
- A password, stored only as a hash. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we store that account’s identifier instead.
- Your birthday and gender. Both are asked for when you sign up with email.
- Profile photos.
- Your city and hometown.
- Optional profile fields: bio, work, education, interests and languages.
Religion and political views (optional, sensitive)
You can add your religion and your political views to your profile. Both are optional and the app works the same without them. They are sensitive personal information. We collect them only if you choose to enter them. By entering them you consent to us storing them and showing them as described under “Who can see what”. You can remove either one at any time in Edit profile.
What you do in the app
- Somedays you write, the ones you keep, and who you set them visible to.
- Plans you make, who is on them, and their dates and places.
- Friendships, groups and invites.
- Messages in plan threads, group threads and direct messages.
- Journal entries, including any photos you attach.
- Reports and blocks you make, and reports made about you. A report can include a short written note from the person who files it.
- The place names you type into place search.
Device and purchases
- Your push notification token, if you allow notifications.
- Device type, operating system and app version.
- Crash and error reports. These include your handle so we can tell which account hit a problem.
- Whether you have Gimik Plus and until when. We never see your card or payment details. Apple or Google takes the payment.
Why we use it
- To run the app: your list, matching with friends, plans, messages and groups.
- To show local somedays and nearby people, using your city.
- To send notifications about plans and messages, and account emails such as verification and password reset.
- To handle Gimik Plus.
- To keep people safe: reviewing reports, closing abusive accounts and filtering abusive text.
- To find and fix crashes and bugs.
We do not sell your personal data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or sites.
Who processes it for us
These companies handle data on our behalf, only to provide the service named next to them.
- DigitalOcean and Northflank: hosting for the API and the database.
- Cloudflare R2: storage for photos.
- Ably: delivers messages in real time.
- Expo: delivers push notifications.
- Upstash (QStash) and our email provider: send account emails.
- RevenueCat, Apple and Google: run Gimik Plus subscriptions and payments. RevenueCat receives your Gimik user ID and purchase status.
- Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In: if you use them to sign in.
- Google Places: receives the place names you type into place search.
- OpenAI: helps judge whether a place suits an activity. It receives public place details and activity information only, nothing about you.
- Sentry: crash and error reports.
- Google Analytics: website analytics, covered under “This website” below.
Who can see what
- Each someday has a visibility setting: just you, Friends, Groups, or Everyone in your city. You choose it per someday and can change it later.
- Your profile can be seen by other Gimik users. That includes religion and political views if you have added them. Remove those fields if you do not want that.
- Messages are visible to the people in that conversation.
- Journal entries are private unless you share one.
- Blocking someone hides you from each other and sends us a report. The person you report is never told who reported them.
- Our staff can see account data when they need to, for example to review a report or fix a fault.
How long we keep it
- Account data: kept while your account exists, and deleted immediately when you delete the account.
- Backups: deleted data rolls off our backups within 30 days.
- Server logs: 30 days.
- Place-search logs: 90 days.
- Reports: reports about you and reports you filed are kept after you delete your account, as long as needed to keep Gimik safe, and we review them from time to time. They carry your handle and a keyed hash of your email, and a report about a message keeps a copy of that message’s text.
- Purchase records: held by Apple, Google and RevenueCat under their own policies.
Deleting your account
In the app, go to Profile, then Settings, then Delete account. It is permanent. If you cannot open the app, follow the steps on the delete your account page. That page also lists what is removed and what is kept. Groups you created stay for their remaining members.
Minimum age
Gimik is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think someone under 18 has an account, write to support@gimik.app and we will close it and delete the data. Accounts for under-18s are refused at sign-up.
This website
This website uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. It sets cookies and sends your IP address and page activity to Google. Nothing from the app is sent to it. You can block these cookies in your browser or with an analytics blocker, and the site works the same.
Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. You can do most of this yourself in the app. For anything else, write to support@gimik.app. If you are in the Philippines, the Data Privacy Act of 2012 gives you these rights, and you can also complain to the National Privacy Commission. If you are elsewhere, your local law may give you more, and we will honor it. You can withdraw consent for religion and political views at any time by removing them from your profile.
Your data is processed on servers and by providers that may be outside the Philippines. We use only the providers listed above.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
